Notes from Day 5

February 18th, 2008 by Philip Kaplan

It’s been 5 days since Spottt launched. Over 1,300 members have joined so far!

Our goal is to make it easy to advertise your site for FREE. On behalf of the entire Spottt team, I want to thank you so much for joining.

Also, today we launched the “throttle” I referred to the my last post. Now, big sites don’t gobble up credits too fast, allowing smaller sites to prosper as well.

Make sure to add your email address to the SUBSCRIBE box to the right, so that you get notified when this blog is updated.

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.

Seems throttle is working. I was only seeing the same 3 or so sites all the time. Today I have been seeing a lot of others. I’ve yet to see my own turn up anywhere and my numbers are still quite a bit higher on the giving side than the getting side. Still don’t know how it is meant to work. But nice to read that you have the smaller sites in mind.

Tech Crunch is tamed me happy :)

Throttling not working for me. Yesterday we displayed over 350 spots, but ours was shown only 5 times. That’s good for some - but bad for us. Hope the Spottt team balences this out better.

  5. Jimmy Says:

Not working for me either — no spots displayed since yesterday. Why?

  6. Philip DeFranco Says:

I had the same deal as John. Yesterday I got 498 impressions and today 0. 14k unspent credits. Should be interesting to see where it goes.

    Love what you are doing

John, Jimmy, Philip - You guys shouldn’t have been affected by any of the recent changes, so I’ll check it out and make sure things are running smoothly. Thanks for the feedback and keep it comin.

  8. John Says:

Thanks for the reply Philip. After getting no impressions the last 2 days & almost none the day before, it will be good to see that my Spottts are back in the system

    Also, I have 2 suggestions:

    1. Many people receive 1000 free impressions - but most of those are displayed in the overnight hours when no one can see them. Yesterday abt 6:30am, the 5 Blonds Spottt dominated the ads. This morning abt the same time, it was a Wallpaper Spottt. By the time people wake up and begin browsing, the free placements are used up and no one sees them. Perhaps you can limit the display to 1 every 2 minutes, so that it will take 18 hrs to use up the credits.

    2. There are some great Spottts being displayed, but often people will not click on them. They will want to visit them later — but, the ads not be seen again. So, how about making the Spottts searchable? If someone clicks on your border, they can either join or search. What do you think?

  9. Jim Says:

Hi there. I just wanted to let you guys know that the same day I joined Spottt, I bought my first Google Adwords ad. Amazingly, I’ve actually received more click-throughs from your free service than through Google. Keep up the great work!

    John-

    1. We were actually giving away free impressions on some of the bigger sites. And these free impressions weren’t showing up in your stats. They will show up now. We’re also making sure that your impressions aren’t dominated by a few large sites. In summary: We’re continuing to tune today, but you should find that you’re already getting more impressions as of now, hopefully. Give us a few more days.

    2. Search - great idea. Adding it to the do-to list.

  11. David Says:

I was going to post that it looked like I was being throttled as well, but looks like you’re on top of things. I would love to see the info on high and low CTR you mentioned. Thanks again!

  12. Erica Says:

5 Blondes here… joining Spottt was incredible timing for us as a post of ours had 40000 hits via Stumbleupon over the past week. Don’t expect us to dominate in the future :) Pure luck there!

Question. My stats show several hits via zero impressions. How is this happening? Is that the ‘free’ impressions?

  13. Philip Kaplan Says:

Erica- Things are a bit wonky today, I’ll post a blog about it now. Yes, you are getting free impressions, which are not registering. Things should be settled very soon.
