Tuning Spottt for Sites of All Sizes
February 17th, 2008 by Philip KaplanI think one of the most fun things about Spottt is seeing all the different ads that appear on your site. It’s fun to hop around the Internet by clicking Spottt after Spottt, and seeing where they lead. I’ve already discovered a lot of cool new sites this way.
One of the not-so-fun things is when a really big site joins Spottt and dominates the network. What ends up happening, is that the big site quickly gobbles up everyones credits, and all the smaller sites start pointing back to the big site.
We’ve come up with a solution to the problem: Simply “throttling” big sites so that they don’t gobble up credits tooooo fast. In other words, slowing down how quickly a big site can deplete a small sites’ credits.
This will be more fair for all Spottt members.
Spottt will still work great for all sites of all sizes. But if you’re like most people and don’t run a huge site, your credits will go a lot further. You may even end up showing on some of the biggest sites on the Internet, for FREE — we won’t deduct credits every time.
We’re still working on the throttling algorithm, and should have it done within the next day or so. In addition, we’ll constantly analyze network traffic to make sure everyone is treated fairly and with generosity. We also plan on giving away a lot of free credits in the coming days, so stay tuned. :)
In the meanwhile, if you notice any sites that you think are dominating the network, know that we’re on top of it and have a great solution.

Ooops. Accidentally posted my comment in the previous blog entry. Here it is:
I like this concept, but in all fairness to the big websites, the details of the throttling should be published openly so they know what sort of “exchange rate” they are getting. I understand what you are trying to accomplish, but at the same time you must recognize that the large sites are the ones generating most of the traffic. The small sites need the large sites more than the large sites need the small sites. Seems like you may be shooting yourself in the foot with the throttling concept if it drives away large sites. Just my 2 cents.

Shooting in the foot from Dennis is a fair comment.
But a few websites dominating will only disgruntle smaller sites and they may just simply give up on it and quit membership.
I know, I would, what good would it be to me, to advertise only for large sites? And not getting much in return.
I am looking forward for your 2 cents on this Dennis :)
